ILONA SZABÓ DE CARVALHO (ilona@igarape.org.br)

Ilona Szabó de Carvalho is Founder and Associate Consultant of Igarapé. She has a Masters Degree in International Studies from Uppsala University, Sweden, and a specialization in International Development from the University of Oslo, Norway. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in International Relations in Rio de Janeiro and attended an intensive course on peace-keeping and disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR) at the Royal School of Defense in Sweden.

Ilona is a member of the Latin American Commission Secretariat on Drugs and Democracy and an associate of the NGOs' Work Group on the Geneva Declaration on Armed Violence and Development. Previously, she was Coordinator of the Disarmament Campaign and the referendum on the prohibition of the sale of arms to civilians in Brazil, and of the Human Security Program at the Viva Rio NGO. She was also a senior manager of the Synergos Institute office in Brazil.

She served as a consultant for several organizations, including the United Nations, the Norwegian Government, QUNO-Geneva, the Brazilian Forum on Public Security, among others.

She is a member of the Consultative Council of the Youth Department of the Open Society Institute and the Realice Institute.
